Rotary Racer 9: 2011-2012: Design Ideas
-
Based on RR8, aluminum tube, steel bits, plywood and foam.
-
Need to match 2013 rules. Mainly drivers bottom and batteries bottom less than 100mm from road.
-
Length 3.8m (maybe removable tail to aid transport in vans).
-
Narrow roll-bar and behind roll-bar (by 50mm ?).
-
Reduce cars depth (50mm ?)
-
Reduce cars width (550mm ?)
-
Lower car nearer ground and play with underside and top shape in wind tunnel.
-
Where to put batteries (behind driver either side, front, sides of driver, rear as now) ?
-
Battery placements. Insulated
-
Heat batteries with heat from motor somehow.
-
Use 16inch wheels. Find better rims to easy of tyre replacement. Need to build some using hubs we have (or use RR8's wheels).
-
Move cross bar in front of driver further forward (50mm ?) and curve up in the centre.
-
Thinner computer display shaped for curve or to the side.
-
Move rollbar back 50mm for more driver space.
-
Move lower crossbar in driver area further back (150mm ?)
-
Remove heavy plywood bits.
-
Foam bits as a shell to reduce weight.
-
Rear axle single bar to reduce weight (depends on CoG and where batteries are) or aluminium welded rear subframe ?
-
Aluminium or lighter weight front steering system.
-
Improved electronic power control system. Work on new speed controller.
-
Experiment with overal shape (Wind tunnel tests both VWT and RWT) ?
-
Lighter weight wheel covers ?
-
Target weight 50Kg ?
Misc Ideas
- Tilt wheels in at the top. (Rolling resistance issues ?)
- Chop off corners of frontal area more.
- Insulated batteries in small boxes that they can be transported in.
- Look at using lightweight carbon fibre sheet for top and bottom panels.
- Carbon fiber/fibreglass parts.
