Greenpower - Sponsorship

Rotary Racer Chipping Sodbury Secondary School

The aims of the Greenpower initiative is to promote engineering and technology as exciting careers, to those aged 9-21. The concept for their F24 race is for teams of secondary school pupils, their parents and teachers to design, build, develop and race highly efficient "green" electric racing cars. The pupils are exposed to many facets of engineering and other disciplines in doing this. These include:

  1. Research and the science of designing efficient, low power, cars.
  2. Mechanical design.
  3. Electrical and electronic design.
  4. Development and production of a real car employing metal, wood and composite materials amongst others.
  5. Team meetings and team work.
  6. Media production for promotion of the team and sponsorship.
  7. Team discipline and working together to race the car in a race.
  8. Working on a real project with the parents and teachers.
  9. Racing an electric car around large race circuits such as Goodwood.

Chipping Sodbury School, under the direction of Carla McMorrow - a Design Technology teacher, been involved in the Greenpower initiative for many years. Many previous team members have gone on to careers in engineering at all levels. The school currently has 4 individual teams with a minimum of 6 pupils which the support of their parents in each. We meet on Monday evenings in the school's Design and Technology rooms. The team have been very successful to date producing a number of innovative cars that have performed well in the races. For more information we have the following websites:

If you are able to support us in any way it would be gratefully received by the team. The team are run entirely by donations and sponsorship which is used to buy essential equipment and paying for race entires. As a sponsor your logo will be seen on our website referred to by many, our social media accounts, in local paper race write ups, local events as well as competitors, spectators and officials at race meets and by the general public while in transit. The cars are raced at a variety of locations across the country, in 2019 we got the opportunity to race at venues such as Goodwood Motor Circuit, Bedford Autodrome, Castle Combe Circuit as well as Silverstone Circuit for the International Final. These events are very well attended with up to 80+ cars racing during each meet. The Greenpower organisation also have their own media department who produce stills and videos from each event which are shared widely online. Following races we produce race reports which are sent to the school newsletter along with the local paper which prints and distributes approximately 13,000 copies each month. This ensures that our sponsor’s names are exposed as widely as possible. In order to compete in these events it costs the team approximately £80 per race per car for the F24 category, we hope to enter both RR9 and RRX in this category for 6 races to give our expanding team of 12 drivers as many opportunities to drive as possible. We also hope to race both cars in the F24+ category which costs £110 per car per year. Therefore the average cost to enter a car in both categories over the year and fund running repairs is approximately £1500.
